Did you know that a single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years?

That’s why it is so important to have cats desexed.

Apart from reducing the numbers of unwanted pets, desexing delivers many health benefits for our feline friends, plus desexed animals live generally longer and healthier lives. As well, desexed cats are generally more sociable and affectionate and make better companions to their human carers.

Most of all, desexing averts the tragedy of having unwanted litters which are then either sold, given away, abandoned – or worse.

We know that more and more people have embraced cat ownership during the pandemic.

At the same time, many Tasmanian households are experiencing financial hardship, which means that the cost of desexing their cats is often beyond their reach.

As part of our commitment to assist in reducing the unwanted number of cat litters, the RSPCA is now offering a program to assist those that can least afford the often expensive operation.

This state-wide is designed for people who are eligible for Centrepay.

This scheme offers a simple online system to help cat owners stretch out the payments for their desex vet bills. The owner pays us a deposit of $30 up front. We pay the vet bill for them and they then repay the balance owing through their Centrelink payments at a minimum of $25 per fortnightly payment. This program is only available to holders of health care, pension and student cards, and only one application per person can be supported at any one time.

We’re also investigating additional options for low income earners that are not receiving Centrelink benefits.
