It’s been a huge year so far for RSPCA Tasmania.

Our major project, closing the largest puppy farm in the state, absorbed us for many weeks and focussed our team on our current capacity and future needs.

When negotiating the deed to close Tasmanian Labradoodles, we knew we did not have the required kennels to care for the dogs. Still, we had every confidence in our community that doors would be opened to these deserving dogs.

Almost all 239 dogs are now in their new forever homes, with a small number still in foster care. Our team members are gratified by the love, care, and protection shown by those in the community who found a place for the dogs in their homes.

Some adjusted overnight, while others took their time, requiring behaviour training, complex surgeries, and ongoing medical treatment for ear infections and digestive issues.

The dogs in our care were groomed as soon as they came off the farm, and as of this writing, we are starting to see their beautiful coats grow in, signifying the meeting of their new, safe lives.

Now that we have the project well in hand, our minds are turning to the next challenge—most notably, replacing the kennels at our 35-year-old animal care centre on the northwest coast.

As a not-for-profit organisation working in animal welfare, our funding opportunities are somewhat limited. That is why we are now turning to you to help us raise the funds to build 18 new kennels and dog runs. We will look at all funding opportunities and have restrained additional activities to ensure that our organisation is in the best position possible to continue to respond to animal cruelty complaints and other community needs, like our Safe Beds Program, while we build new kennels for the dogs seized by our inspectors.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Andrea Dawkins
