Trevor Brew from Rosebery, on 2 November 2021 pleaded guilty in the Queenstown Magistrates Court to a charge of animal cruelty. Brew had slashed his dog, Thor, across the throat with a knife when playing with the dog, saying it had started to get aggressive.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Daly sentenced Brew to 2 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years, and a fine of $2,000.
Magistrate Daly said what Brew had done was a “confronting way of inflicting animal cruelty”, as Brew had armed himself then slashed the dog.
He said the penalty imposed was meant to reflect the seriousness of the offence and to act as a deterrent.
Magistrate Daly also ordered that Brew be disqualified from owning a dog for 3 years.
